This will be a little shorter than my usual post. But I wanted to touch on a very important subject regarding the growth and development of Baby (ok…yes she’s almost 3 years old but still) Morgan. From the day we found out that she had a brain bleed and that there would be some development delays related to that…I spend hours sitting in the NICU researching what would I could do to help her heal and grow. There was an article about “Reading to those with Brain Injuries” that caught my eye on a website and it forever changed how I thought about things.
Briefly the article described how reading books, magazines, articles, or anything for that matter and the sound of the voice, all plays a key into the healing of the brain. I became obsessed with the idea of reading and finding books for her. Honestly before that, I was already obsessed with the idea of Morgan’s brain healing itself because I knew science & medicine were key to her growth and healing…thanks to her Dad being a true and hard believer in science. But finding that tidbit of information on reading and the power of how it could heal was enough for me.
I had a large collection of children’s books from my childhood that I still possessed and so I would take 2-3 to the hospital everyday and read to her. I would read to her for hours, in hopes that hearing my voice would heal her. Our doctors even admitted eventually that studies have shown that those who’ve had traumatic brain injuries and had people read to them daily or talk to them for 3-5 hours a day (total), showed more brain activity and progress in heal that those who didn’t. So it was my mission. The power of the human voice and words is just amazing and as someone who believes it’s the main reason Morgan has progress so much, I’ve continued that at home. Even night almost since Morgan came home, my father or I read to her. She gets a story a day to make the brain stay healthy. I thought sharing some of her favorite books would be a perfect segway into my request for everyone who reads this and has small children.
READ TO YOUR KIDS! READ TO THEM WHILE THEY ARE SMALL ENOUGH TO LISTEN. READ TO THEM WHILE THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LISTEN. READ TO HELP WITH BRAIN FUNCTION AND DEVELOPMENT. READ TO THEM FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES AND INTELLIGENCE. IT TAKES NO TIME TO READ A STORY…IT’S BETTER THAN TV!
Also Morgan has been enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. It offers any child that signs up a new book, once a month until they turn 5 years of age. It’s an amazing free service, where the books are sent straight to your home. The books can be hardback or paperback and they are age appropriate based off the child’s age.
