I had to take a Mommy moment and go see “BLACK PANTHER”!!!
I know some will be annoyed by this post because they’ve been bogged down by “Black Panther this” and “Black Panther that” since its release on Thursday but I have to talk about this movie. The complete movie dork that I am will not allow me to ignore my feelings about it. I also wouldn’t be being true to myself, my love of movies or my culture by not addressing the sheer excitement I got by seeing this movie.
PROUD, BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, FANTASTIC, CULTURAL, APPRECIATION, WORK HARD, GO HARD, THINK HARD, UNDERLYING SYMBOLISM, LOVE OUR BLACK MEN, LOVE OUR BLACK QUEENS, REVOLUTIONARY, BOMB.COM, EXEMPLARY, GREAT, OUT OF THIS WORLD, BUT MOSTLY PHENOMENALLY PROUD OF ALL THAT IT REPRESENTS. THE FEELINGS THAT I FEEL BEFORE AND AFTER WATCHING IT. I MEAN SHIT… BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! I’VE SAID IT BEFORE BUT HOLY SHIT (EXCUSE MY CURSING EXCITEMENT) BUT DAMN IT I LOVE BEING BLACK AND THIS MOVIE SHOWED US…IT’S POSSIBLE! IT’S POSSIBLE TO BE A HERO, IT’S POSSIBLE TO HAVE AN ALMOST ALL BLACK CAST, IT’S POSSIBLE TO HAVE A BLACK DIRECTOR TURN A COMIC BOOK INTO A MOVIE, IT’S POSSIBLE TO HAVE BLACKS REPRESENTED POSITIVELY, IT’S POSSIBLE!!!!
Black Panther Himself
After all that, let me adore on the cast, specifically – THE BLACK PANTHER HIMSELF! Take a bow Mr. Boseman because I mean “DAMN”. I’ve been a Chadwick fan from jump. I mean that beautiful man – it’s his demeanor that just pulls me in, in every single character I’ve seen him play. It’s a chillness and calmness about him that makes me feel just nothing but adoration for him. And most importantly, I find him to be just crazy sexy. With BP, I found that he played the part of a KING…very well. He was timid at first but yet ready. He carried himself with class and dignity and held his head high…and well let me say that his BP Suit is the best thing ever created in the Marvel World (sorry Ant-Man & Wasp). The suit is made of a fictional metal Vibranium that comes from BP’s homeland. The suit is BOMB.COM FOLKS and Shuri designed the hell out of it. THE KING HAS ARRIVED and thats why he will help kick all types of ass in “Infinity War“.
I mean Jesus himself sent this cast from heaven because watching them…gave me chills. Ryan Coogler and his casting director did a phenomenal job picking these actors because I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing who they played. From Chadwick to Mike to Winston to Daniel to Lupita to Danai to Angela to Letitia, I mean these beautiful black people had me going crazy. I must say that I adored Letitia (Shuri). I’d seen her before in Black Mirror and liked her but in this movie – she killed it. Her voice and her film presence made me love the brother and sister storyline even more. It showed such positivity between older and younger siblings and clearly between a black male and a black female – much respect and love between the two. Another set of women I loved – Danai and Lupita. I MEAN DAMN! These two have always been favorites of mine – I watched Danai turn Michonne on “The Walking Dead” into a fan favorite and Lupita has been in a couple of movies that I’ve really liked…she’s another one with strong stage presence. The character connections and storyline are just phenomenal and it’s hard to even put in words, just how cool this movie was and the history it’s making in its opening weekend.
I’d been following everything “BP” since I heard almost two years ago that Marvel was definitely going to give it a solo film. I watched closely as music big wigs from Jay-Z to Diddy had names thrown in the hat of being “creative” musical influencers for the soundtrack. But I was delightfully surprised when Kendrick Lamar was named as the choice and that possibly none of the others were even in the running (in my opinion) after hearing the soundtrack…no one could have pulled of music for this film like him. The soundtrack is full of culture, promise, pride and everything needed to make it a much-needed purchase for anyone whose a fan of him or BP. The song that rolls at credits is “All The Stars” and anyone who knows me…knows I love SZA so much. So this song has been on repeat since I downloaded the album. It’s also just a beautiful song. The video is below and taken from YouTube off Kendrick’s VEVO account. WATCH IT!!!!!
My People, My People,a My People…we showed up and out this weekend for this movie and I love it. Sold out everywhere. Celebrities buying out whole theaters of shows for the misfortune. The Tweets, the IG Post, the media going nuts. KEEP IT UP!!!!! See how we make history when we act in numbers. This my people proves to Hollywood that we have power in numbers and that we would support more of this in the future. If you have an IG account, I am positive that it was hard to miss some of the truly invested folks that went all in for going to the theatre. I mean folks went as King Jaffe from Coming to America, while others wore dashikis and kente cloths and various other african prints. While I opted for a chiller look of Fenty Beauty “Wasabi” lipstick and a Black Panther T-Shirt, Leather Jacket and Black Knee Highs…I was all but blacked out. It’s been a fantastic week of “black fashion”. (Below are some of the postings from IG & Twitter about the movie from this weekend pulled directly)
Thoughts & Ramblings
The storyline for this movie was complete and as a movie fanatic, that in itself was a triumph because a lot of times (not with Marvel per say) but with some book to movie adaptations, they hype the movie up so much and then you see it and are totally lost as to what you looked at. This wasn’t like that. Cohesive and well thought out. Marvel really knocked this one out of the park and what makes me even more excited and happy is that it’s doing better in its first weekend that some of the major caucasian characters that run the Marvel storylines like “Thor, Iron Man and Captain America”. All of which have congratulated Ryan and crew on a successful opening weekend.
I will say this too, which some might not like but I don’t care. I read a couple of post from friends and folks on social media that I find to be just annoying. Basically the same people who when it comes to supporting certain black things or things popular in culture they want to whine and moan and it’s annoying because they are black. One…you get nothing from being a hater! Ok so you don’t like comics or Marvel. This storyline didn’t follow any of the previous ones so it’s completely detached meaning you don’t have to know Marvel or any of Black Panthers predeceasing characters to enjoy it. But anyway…I found some of the comments related to be annoying. If you aren’t liking it…ok but don’t bash something you know nothing about or aren’t interested in because everyone else is excited about it. Mind you- these are the same idiot folks that are bashing this but are known “twerk” competition contestants. So you can see my point. Supporting some nonsense instead of supporting history is just well…Moronic. I say…see it and support…doesn’t matter your preferences or don’t see it but then don’t say anything about it.
I think it needs to be made clear that this movie isn’t about blacks hating whites or about pushing culture on anyone. It’s not about racism or leaving anyone out. It’s about Black Panther and all his greatness. He is one of the most critical Black characters to the Marvel storyline and as a Marvel fan…I was happy to know that he was popular enough to even have a solo movie. The fact that Marvel pushed this movie with such promotion, budget and didn’t allow any backlash given before its release to hinder or hurt it’s chances of being a great film, made me happy. Marvel Studios, itself is amazing. Thor Ragnarok was one of my favs to the collection so far so they are doing quite well regardless but I think what they’ve done with this film is gather a larger following and support system in the black community which wasn’t there before. Since I’ve been a crazed fan since they first started making the movies and have followed it closely, this just makes me love them even more. So this was a long time coming…
Wanted to show some of the very cool pictures I found related to the movie from Entertainment Weekly, IMDB, IG Black Panther Account, IG & Twitter and Wikipedia. I’m using these images without permission but giving credit.
Had to speak on these posters. I MEAN WTF!! Soon as the posters were released…I was hype! Almost each major character got a poster.
