Another Gastro Visit…Last Week

Just incase no one has idea of what Gastro is…
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ.

Morgan had G-Tube really early on in life. Now do I believe it helped anything by having it…No but for us her issue wasn’t feeding and was more added as a precaution incase she didn’t want to eat or had issues eating.  It never happened though because the minute she could eat…she was scarfing food down (throwing up too) but still eating.  Anyway, Morgan has been riddled with doctors appointments and specialist since birth.  But it’s all understandable right…for all that she’s been thru (read her page for the story).  Last week we visited our Gastro specialist again – (4 times a year) and this made it our first appointment for the year.   We hadn’t been since August, so my hope was that we’ve grown a lot and that we would be on the preemie growth chart (I’ll explain this pain in my behind below). But we’ve also realized after appointments with various doctors that she could have her fathers metabolism and therefore – won’t be as chubby and fat as her mom.  GOOD THING RIGHT!! I’m the complete opposite of her father and while together we spent a good amount of time eating but for all that he ate (which was two times the amount of me most of the time)…he never gained weight, while if I ate anything I gained 50 Ibs instantly.  Now granted that he has always been much more active than I, but still, he shovels cakes, meat and sandwiches in and gains nothing.

Anyway, her father and I had concerns about her weight going into this appointment, as Morgan tends to be on the thin side. But as you can see below…her dad is thin like I explained above.

Since the beginning, we’ve been told that she needs to gain weight.  With this request came long list of foods and condiments that would help her bulk up.  I promise you that when I cook for her that her food is slathered in butter and olive oils and still we aren’t seeing the type of growth we may see in a non-premature birthed child.  She’s not at all skin and bones but she’s definitely slim and thin (which personally, I don’t see as being the worse thing ever).  The suggestions from the doctors are always to BULK UP. Bulk up on High Calorie Foods and I mean the list is intense and some of this stuff, Morgan just isn’t going to eat…suggestions have been things like this:

  • Avocados (Ok, so she’ll eat it but with some salt and pepper but we only get thru a half)
  • Beans – black, navy, red, pinto, kidney, white (NOPE….BARELY WILL SWALLOW)
  • Eggs (ugh….)
  • Bananas (She takes a bite and swallows and on the second bite and after takes it out)
  • Mangoes (These are seasonal in my area…WTH)
  • Lentils (I don’t even eat these….YUCK)
  • Fresh ground meats (dark meat poultry, beef, lamb, pork)
  • Whole milk yogurt (She likes yogurt but not everyday)
  • Full fat cottage cheese (YUCK, YUCK, YUCK)
  • Mashed sweet potatoes
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Mashed squash (Yes and No)
  • Peanut butter or nut butter (She starts gagging most of the time)
  • Goat cheese (YUCK)
  • Cooked quinoa or buckwheat  (Ok at the buckwheat but only as a pancake)
  • Diced sausage
  • Dried fruit (Most of time – this is hard)
  • Mini quiche (It’s an egg basically and she’s weird about eggs)
  • Hard boiled eggs (She rarely eats a scrambled egg…so this is impossible)
  • Frosted wheat biscuits (WHAT IS THIS?)
  • Diced grilled cheese sandwich
  • Homemade pancakes, waffles, and French toast sticks (had a lot of success with these)
  • Sugar plums (WHAT??? ARE WE IN THE NUTCRACKER…WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN)
  • Mozzarella balls
  • Sweet potato fries
  • Cheese curds

Ok so first let me hit on these things.  Most of this…Morgan will spit out or make herself throw up so that she doesn’t have to swallow it. Cottage cheese was a mess – and then the only person that could get her to eat it was my Mom but it had to be mixed with some fruit. I ABSOLUTELY HATE COTTAGE CHEESE AND REFUSE TO BUY IT. But anyway thats just the first list…the add-ins list is just as long and intense…

High Calorie Additives:
The items listed below can be added to any and all foods.

    •   Oils (canola, safflower, flaxseed, walnut, and sunflower are good sources of essential fats)
    •   Butter
    •   Ground flaxseed
    •   Ground chia seeds
    •   Heavy cream
    •   Cheese
    •   Dry milk powder
    •   Sour cream
    •   Cream cheese
    •   Maple syrup

I MEAN SHEESH!!! This is stuff that I personally can’t have or try and stay away from but I’m buying it to help bulk her up. Only thing we haven’t tried is the Dry Milk power – I mean what in the heck can I make with that?

If you don’t have a preemie – this won’t even matter to you but at least will show you what we “preemie parents” go thru on regular basis trying to keep our kiddos on a path.

The list as you can see is full of things that either she is or isn’t interested in. Going into this appointment I was already prepared for our Nurse to tell us just how little Morgan still was but SURPRISE – SURPRISE…GOOD NEWS!! Though Morgan was below on weight (she’d actually lost weight) she had actually gained a significant amount of height – which if anyone knows body anatomy – knows that it plays a role in weight and how you carry it.  She was 86.5 cm which is 2 Feet 10 inches.  So my baby girl is and will be tall (again like her father).  But only weighed 20 Ibs.  During our discussion – we went over Morgan’s continued need for a her high calorie formula recipe and also for her to continue on Pedisure (it’s supposed to help them grow). Though she was below the preemie growth chart for weight still (but not by too much)…usually she’s actually really far off too that we should continue or path and see how she looks in April.  I consider this appointment to be a success!!! We made it…to the HEIGHT CHART!!!! See it’s the little things.

This video was kinda cute at the time because she wouldn’t stop playing with the table paper. But no complaints because it kept her occupied while we waited…

Peace, Love and Heavy Cream Using,

L’Erin & Morgan
